In first grade, students continue to learn foundational reading skills. These include orally isolating, blending, and manipulating sounds as components of words, using phonics rules to decode words following basic patterns, and recognizing irregularly spelled words. These skills work together to develop skills among first graders to read grade-level texts with accuracy and appropriate rate with purpose and understanding.
Our phonics program is Open Court Foundational Skills, which builds on the foundation established in K with sound-spelling correspondences and spelling strategy development
Students continue their daily writer's workshop, using Lucy Calkins writing units, where they create true and fictional stories, opinions, and organize information about a topic.
Students continue to learn the mechanics of handwriting through the Handwriting Without Tears Program, which is a developmentally appropriate, multisensory approach.
We continue to work with students to participate in collaborative conversations and demonstrate the standard English grammar in speaking and in writing.
Massachusetts has adopted the Common Core State Standards, which has designated specific skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language at each grade level.
