- Be the Change: An Inquiry-Based Design Challenge (3 - 12)

Why do we make marks? This question is posed to all 7th Graders at Wayland Middle School challenging them to view their art not simply as a tool for expression but also a tool for engagement and action. By tapping into the power of Creating, students identify challenges in their own world, develop innovative solutions with which to solve them and persuade others to support their ideas. Using this unit framework as a starting point, this presentation will guide participants through the design process- Define, Empathize, Ideate, Prototype and Test -- a means to engage their own students in authentic, inquiry-based experiences. Participants will identify essential qualities of design learning, view project samples, and develop strategies for incorporating inquiry and innovation into their own classroom practice.
- Not Reinventing the Wheel: Adapting Existing Activities to the Engineering Design Process (6 - 12)

One teacher's experience in repurposing some existing labs and experiments so as to incorporate some of the key elements of the engineering design process while maintaining the content integration of existing labs. After struggling with a way to find the time to inject the engineering design process into an existing curriculum, this teacher realized the solution might be in repurposing rather than adding. Making a determination that the two most worthy, novel aspects of the engineering design process are (1) iteration and (2) embracing failure as part of the process, I have targeted certain existing activities within my curriculum and rewritten them to explicitly address these two aspects of the engineering design process.
- Self-Grading Tests (K - 12)

You create a test in Google Firms, complete with images and video if you wish. Students take the test and responses are auto collected in a Google Sheet. A simple add-on allows the sheet to grade the test for you. A very handy classroom tool for any teacher.

- Engaging Elementary Engineers with Programming (K – 5)

Our pathway to programming in the Wayland Public Schools started about 8 years ago with a Wayland Public Schools Foundation grant for BeeBots and Pro Bots. Our program grew with Scratch and has continued to evolve as the Hour of Code has ushered in a whole new opportunity for students to program. New devices, for example Dash and Blue-Bots are currently being piloted. Come learn about our programming map for Kindergarten-Fifth Graders.
