  Stem is Fun for Kids, Grades K - 2

Want to save on tuition? Be a parent volunteer at all 8 sessions of great STEM fun!

DESCRIPTION:   Through STEM activities, children learn something new each week as they explore STEM concepts through play. Children will think, construct, experiment, discover and develop the desire to learn more.

Yoga for Children Grades K - 2    
Yoga
DATES:  8 Tuesdays, April 4 - May 30, 2017 (no April vacation week class)
TIME:  Tuesdays, 3 pm - 4 pm 
FEE:  $96

DESCRIPTION:  Children learn yoga poses, build confidence, and have fun. Techniques used include calm breathing, stories, movement, team-building, mindful moments and games. This program has been very successful at Loker School since its debut this academic year.

THE INSTRUCTOR:  Amy has been teaching yoga and mindfulness to children in a variety of settings since 2010. She is also a social worker in the Cambridge Public School district. Check out her website at: heartsandmindsyoga.com.

WEDNESDAY


             Beehive Art Mixed Media Workshop

GRADES:  Kindergarten through Grade 3

LOCATION: 
 Art Room at Loker School

DESCRIPTION:  Beehive Art Studio of Wayland brings its creative workshop to Loker School for an after-school art opportunity. Children explore with a wide range of colorful mediums and techniques. They explore book and printmaking, construct sculptures and mobiles, design spin art, and make miniatures and toys.

A workshop session is usually offered at Loker two or three times a year, with each round of classes consisting of six or eight weeks.

                   Little Local Vocals Children's Chorus  

GRADES:  One through Four

LOCATION:  Little Theatre at Loker School
TIME:  Wednesdays, 2 pm - 3 pm (Loker students come to theatre upon dismissal)  Travel time is built in for students coming from other schools
Students from all three elementary schools may attend the Loker or Claypit. Hill program - there will be a joint concert (with joint rehearsals) at the end of each session.

Learning another language is one of the best ways to become part of the global community. Studying a language at a young age is advantageous since children are most receptive to acquiring a new language when young.
This long-established program (1992)  opens up the world of global languages through hands-on, exciting activities that expose young learners to the language and culture of other parts of the world.

Volleyball Skills, Drills, and Fun
with Pam Kainz, Instructor

DESCRIPTION: Volleyball is offered in the spring at Happy Hollow. Pam Kainz leads this introductory program for boys and girls in Grades 4 and 5. A six-week class, it is a fun way to learn the fundamental skills of volleyball. You will learn and practice forearm passing, setting, and hitting and serving.

Each week, a new skill is introduced, and there are fun drills and games. To help participants understand volleyball rules and scoring, they are explained throughout the clinics.

GRADES: 4 and 5, boys and girls
minimum: 8, maximum, 14
CLASS TIME: 2 (upon dismissal)  - 3 pm

DESCRIPTION:
STEM classes debuted in Wayland schools in the fall of 2015 to great success. STEM classes offer fun-filled and exciting programs focused on building and sustaining interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The goal is to introduce these concepts at an early age through enjoyable and fun activities that incorporate STEM concepts into play or everyday activities.  Children explore with LEGO Bricks, Kapla blocks, K'nex education sets, Snap Circuits, and other STEM toys. The key notion is that children learn best when they are having fun.

      Grade Five Photography Club with Mr. Gees

Mr. Gees offers Photography each year. Classes fill very quickly, so don't wait to enroll. In 2017, 39 children signed up for the 12 spots offered. Mr. Gees accommodated everyone by leading the class for three different sessions.


DESCRIPTION:  No experience needed for this Club, and digital cameras are provided. Learn how to compose a picture, have proper light, and even edit with  I-Photo on the computer. You'll be published in the Wayland Town Crier and be part of an exhibit at the Wayland Town Library.

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Gees has his own studio in Natick, and leads photography clubs for  elementary and middle school students in Wayland.

Gardening is fully enrolled; Ms. Niles plans to offer it regularly in the fall and spring, so watch for information in the school e-blasts.


Growing Together: Gardening with Children
DESCRIPTION:  Connect with the natural world and learn about gardening
FOR: Grades 2 - 5

INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Niles, Grade Two Teacher at Happy Hollow, and leader in developing the school's organic garden (and guest gardeners)
ACTIVITIES:  Make a terrarium, view artwork and paint your own masterpiece, soil prep, planting, weed identification, learn about how seeds differ, take home a plant and learn how to tend it


Class will meet in Room 6 at Happy Hollow.
