Work done to date

  • Summer 2016: School Committee began by reviewing the AAP Policy Statement and other bodies of research, including discussion with adolescent sleep experts  
  • Fall 2016: School Committee held public forums to share information and solicit comments
  • Winter 2017: School Committee conducted surveys of parents and teachers across school levels and middle and high school students and reviewed findings
  • Spring 2017: School Committee and former Superintendent Dr. Paul Stein form School Start Time Taskforce, with participation from parents, teachers, high school students, school administrators and central office staff
  • Fall 2017: Working with the School Start Time Taskforce, Superintendent Dr. Arthur Unobskey proposes middle and high school day of 8am-2:45pm and elementary of 9am-3:30pm.  A number of public forums were held and discussion in School Committee meetings. In December 2017, Dr. Unobskey withdraws the proposal and School Committee encourages further exploration of options that would bring school start time for middle and high school closer to the AAP Policy Statement of 8:30am or later.
  • Winter 2018: Dr. Unobskey continues work with a smaller group of stakeholders to outline new options, including parents, teachers and administrators
  • Spring 2018: Dr. Unobskey releases Start Time Working Group Report outining new options and highlighting challenges and solutions
  • Summer 2018: School Committee continues discussion and narrows to options outlined above
